The maximum amount of text (measured in tokens) an AI model can "see" and consider at once — including your prompt, any attached documents, and the conversation history.
Once a conversation or document exceeds the context window, the model can no longer see the earliest parts of it — which is a common cause of an AI 'forgetting' something you told it earlier.
