Instruction Tuning

A fine-tuning step where a model is trained on examples of instructions paired with good responses, teaching it to follow directions rather than just predict likely next text.

This is a big part of what turns a raw, pre-trained model into a helpful assistant that actually answers your question instead of just continuing your sentence.
